Capable immunity should not guard police from justice, implications

On Jan. 4, 2017, my brother, Muhammad Muhaymin, experimented with to use the general public restroom in Phoenix. It price him his lifestyle.

As the Section of Justice opens an investigation into the Phoenix police, it is time for us to once more demand from customers that police officers, like the types who killed my brother, be held accountable for their steps. A tiny-regarded federal, legal doctrine called qualified immunity has saved thousands of People who have experienced their rights violated from owning their day in court docket. 

Though the particulars of this story are about Muhammad, this injustice could happen to anyone if we don’t close skilled immunity by passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act

A lavatory crack ends in arrest 

My brother endured from schizophrenia, and on the day of his dying, he was briefly living in a park around Maryvale Community Centre in Phoenix. That morning, Muhammad went into the heart to use the restroom with his assistance dog – a chihuahua he had named Chiquita. Because of Chiquita, the manager of the group centre refused to permit Muhammad use the lavatory, even though he had each authorized correct to do so.

Then, community centre staff known as 911, falsely accusing Muhammad of shoving the managerBodycam footage from the 4 Phoenix police officers who responded exhibit that Muhammad was at all periods respectful and courteous. 

At some point, my brother was authorized to use the restroom, but even though inside, the officers ran his title by way of their databases and found that he experienced a no-display warrant from a misdemeanor offense – possession of a marijuana pipe.
